Your clothes “empower” you- Do you know how ?

By Staff Feministaa in Fashion & Lifestyle 06/10/2015

Why is it that your mood is better when you wear your favorite piece of clothing? Has it occurred to you that your clothes really do make you feel in a certain way? Well, they certainly do affect your mental perception but also makes you feel powerful and liberated.

The movie, “House of Versace”, is an exemplary movie which shows, how a clothing line for women which makes them feel powerful helped in bringing back the glory of the Versace Fashion house. After the death of the famous Gianni Versace, Donatella Versace was responsible to pick up the company from ruins and bring back its lost stature. She was stressed, helpless and not motivated initially. But, later, she used her personal style statement into the finale show, which was a line for workingwomen. The finale show was a deal maker as all as inspirational. Although, international designers have made a mark in the formal outfits line, Indian designers are yet to create a clothing line for the working Indian women line in their mainstream collection.

Another inspiring movie is, “Coco before Chanel”. It is a French movie based on the early life of the designer, Coco Chanel. Chanel once said, “Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury “. She believed in an elegant ensemble of sophistication, power and simplicity. The movie talks about her initial fancy to make hats and towards the end, she buds out to become a full-fledged designer. She launched her first collection, which was mainly inspired by the World War 1. This collection was quite close to men’s fashion, as she believed it gave women the “power of flexibility”. She wanted women to not dress up looking fragile and delicate. Her collection possessed the sense of strength and power, while still maintaining the feminine element in her collection.

In the mainstream Indian Fashion industry, we see majority of festive outfits and clear dearth of designer collection for the working Indian woman. Why is it that the modern day corporations still prefer Indian formals like “kurtis” or “sarees”, over the proper office wear for women? Although, there are mid sized brands creating a plethora of clothes for the women at the workplace, but why wouldn’t the high-end designers create a space for the working Indian women? All international designers from Cavalli to Dior to Versace have an extensive line for the women in the workplace. One thing, which can be inferred, is the fact that the west has managed to create a suitable environment for women at the workplace so that they feel secure, accepted and empowered. In India, awareness for women empowerment is growing but at a marginal pace, because of which Indian women still feel held back and insecure at the workplace.

Women empowerment in the Indian society has been a trending issue, which has been in the limelight for a couple of years now. There is a dire need that fashion designers in India, including celebrity fashion designers, contribute through their work . It is not right to say that the mid-size brands, which create workplace wear for women are irrelevant, but we need a much more impactful step to send out the message. The Indian mainstream fashion Industry is quite influential on Bollywood as well as on the Indian layman. Hence, this will be taken seriously and its impact will be widespread. A designer line for Indian women at the workplace will be a game changer, not only for the fashion industry, but also for the society as a whole. This could be the beginning of a movement, supporting the working Indian women.
