By Staff Feministaa in Fashion & Lifestyle 04/01/2016

Clad in beautiful chiffon saris, dancing by the side of misty lake, making cheesy dialogues while the male leads do all the concrete scenes. Aren’t you tired of watching actresses look like Barbie dolls without their substantial contribution to the actual content of the movie? Why is it that the movie always revolves around the Hero trying to do all good things ?

For years bollywood has treated heroines like some accessories to please the eyes of the audiences. But, the film industry has now realised that heroines can play the part of a hero as well . After some recent movies, its proven that heroines need not be the dainty females who are mere showpieces but can also play the main lead with a strong character.

Here is a list of the five movies which were successful in showcasing bollywood heroines as the real heroes.

  • ENGLISH VINGLISH

A film capturing the problem of every “bhartiya nari”, it made a path straight into the heart of every Indian. A comeback movie of Sridevi, who portrays the role Shashi and her journey to learn English in order to earn some respect for herself. She was considered nothing but a good cook who made amazing “ladoos”. This movie is based on the life of the director,Gauri Shinde who herself has witnessed such an incident because of her mother not being proficient in English. According to her, this movie was a way to say sorry to her mother.  It made a bumper opening domestically and overseas, earning $ 400 million in India.

It is a story of Veera, played by Alia Bhatt who develops the Stockholm syndrome after being kidnapped from a petrol pump on a highway. As the narration continues, it is discovered that Veera was molested by his uncle when she was a child and shockingly her mother forced her to suppress this fact. As time passed  by, she became more comfortable with her abductor Mahavir, played by Randeep Hooda, than with her own family. A “not so typical” story, Alia in the main lead plays her role exceptionally well.
