Giving a new life to the Indian skin – Anuradha Balasubramanian

By Sonia Motwani in Starting Up 26/08/2016

She quit her well-paying job and treaded a new path. Having had a background of working with home-grown companies like Cavin Kare and later handling a multitude of functions like training, brand, product development etc. across multinationals like Vodafone, she felt fairly equipped to start out on this journey when she and her partner, Raja, started out in 2012. Meet the co-founder of Syona Cosmetics Pvt Ltd, Anuradha Balasubramanian.

“Don’t wait for someone to give you an opportunity. “Create one” as all of us have an innate inner potential and it is only OUR responsibility that we allow it to blossom fully. It is better to try and fail than never try and regret later.”

Syona Cosmetics Pvt Ltd is into Professional skin and hair care products, services and markets under the brand Estrella Professional. Estrella Professional collaborates with leading laboratories in Europe offering Global Quality professional products that are affordable and made specifically for Indian skin. Intense research, advanced technologies and breakthrough product formulations that are safe and deliver high performance are offered by Estrella.

“There were comparisons with peers, sometimes insecurities would surface, while at other times the path chosen appeared long and arduous. What kept us going is a firm belief in earnest efforts and an open mind to keep learning from mistakes”

When she and her husband started off, they had challenges in almost every area; Quality of manpower, vendor support, prospects being suspicious of our products. They continue to have challenges but now they are more related to scaling up, enhancing customer experience etc. She believes these are pointers to further growth.

“My parents were not skeptical; they were supportive and have always shared their experiences as learnings in life.”

She rates family support as the most important pillar in her journey. She works with her spouse and hence his support has always given her inner strength. Her mother worked as an educator all her life. She recalls how her father offered his unstinting support throughout her mother’s career. Sharing some household chores, tending to children, attending to relatives, her father did all this and more with a natural sense of flair.

“I firmly believe that a family that happily shares each other’s sense of purpose goes a long way in creating a harmonious, joyous society as a whole.”

Social norms and beliefs are fast changing and many women have come out of their “social boundaries” to realise their full potential. With better time and work planning, support from family and workplace, many women are now juggling work and motherhood with great aplomb. Anuradha is one such woman who has broken the stereotype of ‘Ambitious women can be good mothers’.

With a sprightly 6-year-old at home, her day begins early in the morning with a lot of exciting chatter and leads towards a fun-filled day. She also loves tending to our homegrown kitchen garden.

“Training the not so well educated girls from different parts of India and help them to make a career in beauty and seeing them do well in a steady job, brings me all the energy in life to do more of what I do everyday.”

Anuradha Balasubramanian is a woman who has proven her mettle. She is limitless, she is a Feministaa!
