Women with Wit

By Ritika Jain in Trending 11/05/2018

The world around us is changing and not for good. The climate change has become so pronounced that it is difficult to not worry. The subject of detrimental environmental change has received much attention in the news media for some time. Scientists, policymakers, and the public have become increasingly concerned about the threat that such change if it continues unabated, poses for the future.

Yet, the general public remains unaware of the threat they would be facing in the near future.

The only solution to bring about a change is by influencing the masses and who can do that better than the celebrities. There is nothing better than celebrities using their popularity to create awareness on issues that affect us and our surroundings. It is amazing to see artists coming out to show support for various causes as it makes us hopeful to know that there are responsible celebrities as well.

Alia Bhatt, for example, is one celebrity who has shown immense concern towards the environment be it through her ecological initiative “CoExist” or by the several other little initiatives she takes up frequently.

Alia Bhatt

‘I believe that each one of us has a personal responsibility to our planet. And since animals, plants, oceans have no voice of their own, we should speak up for them as well. Coexist is a program I’ve set up with a vision that man lives in harmony with animals and nature. – Alia Bhatt

When a celebrity artist like Alia Bhatt talks about an issue, it is imperative that people will listen to her. Alia has a following of 17.1mn, and she knows that she holds the power to influence people’s opinion and she is doing justice to it by promoting animal welfare and by tackling environmental issues.

Alia also voiced her concern for an 80 kg green sea turtle ‘Queen’ whom she helped to be released into the ocean.

And, when it comes to walking the talk, Alia is not somebody to show her back. She is fostering and keeping pets. She has three cats (Pika, Sheba, and Edward) and three dogs and not just pedigree but also rescued stray dogs. The cats are often seen making Instagram appearances on Alia’s feed.

Recently, on Labour’s Day, the young star signed up to become a Jal Mitra for Aamir Khan’s Paani Foundation. Paani Foundation is a not-for-profit company set up in 2016 by the team of the TV series Satyamev Jayate to fight drought in rural Maharashtra.

Not just Alia, there are other women celebrities who have time and again come forward to show their support for the environment. Did Mirza has been actively involved with several ecological campaigns to promote sustainable living.  She has been recently appointed as UN Environment’s Goodwill Ambassador for India.

“Climate change is a reality and we are experiencing this regularly within India — be it increased frequency and intensity of floods, droughts and forest fires. We are seeing a series of environmental degradation that is being experienced in form of air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and all of this has an impact on human beings, health and our progress as a nation,” Dia Mirza.

Dia Mirza

Dia is also the brand ambassador of the Wildlife Trust of India. And, that’s not it, she has time and again campaigned for various other environmental causes like when the Bollywood actress and ardent animal lover attended the International Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Forum (Summit 2017) to campaign for the protection of snow leopards.

Dia along with the Bhamla Foundation also launched ‘beat plastic pollution’ campaign asking everyone to stop using plastic and think about the environment.

Women like those who choose to use their power and influence for the betterment of the environment, are leaders we are looking for amidst the various shining faces on different forums. Dia Mirza and Alia Bhat are young women celebrities who are responsible and apart from gaining fame for themselves, they are utilizing their influence to fulfill their responsibilities. These are women with wit and they are well versed in the art know of using it well
