Does Self-Worth Come From Knowing Things?

By Priti Bhengra in Editor's Pick 11/01/2019

What is self-worth? “The sense of one’s own value or worth as a person” To put it more simply.“A feeling you should have that you are a good person who deserves to be treated with respect”.

So is knowing varied things or having a high IQ help improve your understanding the importance of your self-worth? Of course, it does. But does it make you any different from the low IQ people who give themselves as much as you do? No there isn’t. So the amount of knowledge you have does not determine your self-worth, it is the amount of self-understanding you have.

So what does varied knowledge or high IQ do for us? In my opinion, it helps boost your self-esteem in some way because you know and trust yourself of the knowledge you have. Self-esteem is just as important as self-worth, but we should not confuse self-worth for self-esteem. Self-worth is a part or to say more particularly is the first step towards self-esteem.

Only when we understand our self-worth and accept it would we be able to have some self-esteem. The knowledge of just this fact is enough to get that most needed self-esteem.

“Self-esteem is what we think and feel and believe about ourselves. Self-worth is recognizing ‘I am greater than all of those things.’ It is a deep knowing that I am of value, that I am loveable, necessary to this life, and of incomprehensible worth.”

If self-worth depended on the knowledge a person beholds, no one would ever be completely self-worthy. Because that’s the funny thing about knowledge, it’s never enough.

So what does help improve our own self-worth? Here are four of the top factors that people can use to measure their own self-worth:

  • Appearance—Not the appearance of that on the mirror, but of that on your own mind. How you see yourself matters the most when you start working on your self-worth. Instead of just comparing your looks, in terms of weight, height, face, complexion, etc., to others you should just start seeing yourself for how you look and value that. For isn’t it true that if all looked the same perfect self we imagine, it would be a boring world out there.

  • Net worth—Not how the world values you, but how you value yourself. If you think you can put a price to yourself on the basis of your looks, income, material possessions, financial assets, you are still seeing yourself through the eyes of the society. Your value is much higher than you can ever imagine.

  • What you do/your career—Does the work you do define you, it’s a yes but not to the society, instead to yourself. If the work you do is something you love or something you are passionate about, wouldn’t you feel motivated and understand how important you are to the world. If not for you, who would be doing this work in any better way?

  • What you achieve—Not what you achieve in the society or the world, but what you achieve in yourself, your heart and mind. Your biggest competition and role model in this world should be you yourself. Doing better than yesterday and in a better way should be our ultimate goal.

“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”Mark Twain

So approve of yourself and only then would the world out there approve of you. Why waste your energy on relying on society or our people for your own happiness and self-worth. You need to take your own responsibility for that.

As Stacey Charter says, “If you can’t love and respect yourself—no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are—completely; the good and the bad—and make changes as YOU see fit—not because you think someone else wants you to be different.”
