She was not gang raped

He who holds the pen writes history irrespective of the truth.

If you pretend nothing happened and if a few media channels flash this news then surely it must have not happened, right? The dying 19-year-old victim’s video recorded statement doesn’t mean anything.

In a report by ANI, Superintendent of Police Vikrant Vir said "The medical report from the Aligarh Muslim University Medical College mentions that there were injuries but it does not confirm forced sexual intercourse. They're waiting for a report of the forensics. As of now, doctors say that they're not confirming rape."

She was not a victim of caste hate crime

The fact that she was a Dalit who was raped by 4 upper caste men doesn’t account for much. According to the data provided by National Crime Records Bureau, in 2019 more than 500 Dalit women were raped in Uttar Pradesh. But that cannot be true! What does NCRB know about the real cultural India.

A BJP leader, Ranjeet Bahadur Srivastava, claimed in an interview that the teenage Dalit girl was “awaara” and the four upper caste men accused of raping her are “innocent.” The said leader with more than 44 criminal cases against him must be right. He is of course leader of the new India.

She was not brutalized

Her spine was not broken, her tongue was not cut out. There must have been some other explanation. As the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath said “People, who have been dividing the society on the basis of caste, religion & region, are still doing it. They can't see development, and so they're hatching new conspiracies. One must recognise those who are doing politics over the death of a person.”

It was just a death. Maybe even a conspiracy to dethrone the government, but never for a second, a tragedy where a life was robbed, violated and ended in a heinous hate crime.

She was not cremated against the wishes of her family

Of course she wished for her last rites to be performed by the gallant UP police. The police cremated her body in an open field at 3.00 AM in the morning, by respectfully barricading the entire area and keeping the family comfortably hostage in their house whilst the body of their daughter burned sans a pyre or a loved one in sight.

The brother of the victim said that the police were making up lies to “save themselves.” However, Brahm Singh, a senior police official, told Al Jazeera that “Everything happened with the permission of the family members. There was a risk of a law and order situation getting out of hand in the village. So, we asked the family members for their permission to cremate the body at night and they allowed the same.”

She was not gang raped. She was not brutalized. She was not a victim of a caste hate crime. She was however the “daughter of India” and becoming the daughter of the nation comes with a price of your life and dignity.

You don’t achieve this title without being inhumanely erased from this earth. She is now a breaking news, a trending hashtag, a tale of horror that mothers warn their daughters about, and another added number on the list of women raped in India 2020.

This will not stop until we break our silence. Stop accepting the conspiracy theories shoved by the media. Hold the System, judiciary, law and, most importantly, the society accountable for its complicit acceptance of rape culture.

Hathras rape victim’s blood is on all of our hands and we can’t wash it off with just a social media post. Stand up, Speak up, because if not now, then when?

Hathras Rape Case Story: A Chronology of What Didn’t Happen

By Priyanshi Sharma in Editor's Pick 08/10/2020

A 19-year-old Dalit girl was brutalized and gang raped in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. She suffered severe injury to her neck and spine, with her tongue cut out that led to her death two weeks later in Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi.

What was her fault? She was Dalit, a woman and collateral damage to a few. Now she is a candle march, a political debate and yet another name added to the list of Nirbhaya, Unnao, Kathua and Priyanka Reddy.

With prime time media and breaking news fiends reporting relentlessly on every “new” discovery in this case which has garnered national interest, I have taken it upon myself to tell you all what didn’t happen in the Hathras Rape Case.
