Fifty years ago, Sirimavo Bandaranaike was elected as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka becoming the first woman ever to serve the prestigious position of  the Prime Minister. 

And the story begins from here

Women and power is the best combination, but it isn’t easy to taste the delicacy of power. These women had to fight for their rights and equality and are still a part of this war. They are iconic leaders and they have proved to be competent in various fields like politics, technology, philanthropy and even business. These women have a vision which is even hard to imagine along with their revolutionary thinking capabilities, leadership skills and exemplary skill of managing responsibilities.

We present to you the 5 most powerful women of the world who have entirely changed the perception of “women at the workplace”: 

  •  Angela Merkel

A German politician, she is Germany’s first female chancellor and is in power since 2005. In 2007, she became the President of the European Council and chaired the G8, being the second women to do so.

She was ranked as the world’s second most powerful person by the Forbes magazine in 2012 and 2015, which is the highest ranking ever achieved by a woman. In December 2015, she was named as Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

We placed her as the world’s most powerful woman because of her impressive role played to curb the EUROPEAN CRISIS. She played a crucial role at the European and international level, and has been referred to as “the decider.”

  •  Melinda Gates

People all over the world know her more as a philanthropist rather than being the wife of Bill Gates. She is the co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Known for her generous donations, she donated more than $3.9 billion in the year 2014.

Through her work, she has managed to empower women so as to bring a transformation in the health and prosperity of numerous families and communities.

  • Hillary Clinton

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, an American politician served as the 67th Secretary of State of the United States under President, Barack Obama. She was the first lady during Bill Clinton’s tenure of presidency. Currently, she is a candidate for the US Presidential elections that are to be held in 2016. If she wins, she will set the record of being the first woman president of the United States.

As a Secretary of State in the Obama administration, Clinton was not only at the forefront while posing a reply to the Arab Spring but also advocated the U.S. military intervention in Libya. She took full responsibility for the security lapses related to the 2012 Benghazi attack, which resulted in numerous deaths of American consulate personnel.

  • Sheryl Sandberg

The Chief Operating Officer of our much loved social media site Facebook,  was nominated as a member of Board of Directors in the year 2012.

She became the first woman to serve on Facebook’s board.

She was ranked tenth in “the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business” by Forbes Magazine in the year 2014. Also, it was only recently that she lost her husband  after he fell from a treadmill. She wrote a 1700 words message expressing her grief which received more than 6  lakh responses on Facebook.

She has been constantly working in the direction of establishing gender equality. In March 2015, her company LeanIn.org launched a public service campaign with the NBA and WNBA as an effort to promote equality.

  • Christine Lagarde

A French lawyer and a politician for the Union for Popular Movement, she is also the Managing Director of International Monetary Fund since 2011. She has held various ministerial posts for the French government, some of which are Minister of Economic Affairs and Minister of Agriculture and Fishing etc.

She was the first woman to be appointed as the Finance Minister of G8 and first woman to head IMF.
