Bollywood has been quite famous for promoting sexism since inception. It has often been an evident reflection of what society thinks and feels about men and women separately, and this is the reason people have often been able to connect with the kind of cinema Bollywood portrays.
Pink, in the recent times, is another reflection of our society’s mentality and sadly people can even connect to every aspect shown in the film.
In the movie Pink, it is very brilliantly shown how women are seen amongst our society. They are judged regardless of what they do. The hypocritical nature of people towards both the genders is blatantly portrayed and mocked. Director, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury has cleverly framed the scenes in the movie and all the actors have done justice to the roles, his direction and to the story of the movie.
But the most saddening part about the movie are the tactics used to promote it. In the present scenario, when Bollywood produces cinema like, “Mastizaade” and “Kya kool hai hum 3” where women are shown nothing more than just sex symbols, a movie like “Pink” is an effort to convey that women are not a property, their consent and choices should not be based on what the society wants them to do.
In a scenario where Pink should have been known for it’s story. It’s direction and it’s effort for conveying something meaningful to the society; Pink has just turned out to be another “Brilliant performance of Amitabh Bachchan!”
Though, it’ll be wrong to deny that Mr. Bachchan has given a tremendous as well as an impactful performance in the movie but the fact that he has left no stone unturned to enforce his “sudden” love for feminism, through his latest commercial choices, to sell the movie reveals a lot more than meets the eye.
Writing a letter to his granddaughter and releasing it on social media, doing a video with BLUSH (Creative short film-makers on Youtube) on feminism, just before the “feminist” movie was about to be released reveals how effortlessly and smartly the industry tried to cash down on a sensitive and important topic like “feminism.”
Pink has everything that can catch the audience’s eyes and provoke them to think. From it’s dialogues to it’s cinematography, everything has been crafted intelligently. The movie revolves around one incident that manages to raise questions on the characters of three girls who had been living a ‘normal’ life until then. Actresses Tapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang all did a commendable job.
Hence the question here arises why did a movie with such strong storyline had to rely on such tactics to promote the movie?
Why did the PR use a big name like “Amitabh Bachchan” to promote the movie by artificially hyping feminism? Till date we haven’t seen Mr Bachhan feel this much for Feminism.
In no platform has it been called as a Tapsee Pannu movie, or an Aniruddha Roy Movie, or something else; rather all the platforms have addressed the movie as an Amitabh Bachchan movie, which is indeed ironic considering the fact that we are talking about Feminism and gender equality here.
Like any other cheap stint, the movie tries to tell the adverse effects of power and name by glorifying the one established actor to sell it’s content.
In conclusion, Pink should only be watched and known for its effort to show the real picture of the society. It’s powerful storyline and clever direction, and the commendable job of ALL the actors.
