The MET Gala 2019 has been making the usual headlines and more significantly for the usual reasons. The outfits adorned by celebrities – the more absurd the better. The iconic Lady Gaga strip to the Zendaya Cinderella dress swap, and of course our very own Priyanka Chopra making the cut for an almost ‘Alice in Wonderland’ vibe!
Referred by the media as the “Oscars of Fashion”, the 2019 MET Gala was the 71st edition.
But what exactly is the MET Gala?
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, hosts an annual ball – a fundraising gala organized for the benefit of its Costume Institute. The Costume Institute’s annual designs are exhibited in this event in the presence of the glittering who’s who from fashion, music, art, and Hollywood along with the New York City elites!
The Costume Institute Gala, as the MET Gala is formally addressed, started in 1948 to raise funding for the Costume Institute. Eventually, this simple event of just midnight dinner saw its transformation into a “jewel in New York City’s social crown” of today! One of the most exclusive social events in the world, the MET Gala is now global news, more so because of the guest list. But at the same time, it has been equally making headlines for the amount of money raised, with the 2019 Gala’s raisings expected to surpass 200 Million US dollars!
A brainchild of the American Fashion Publicist, Eleanor Lambert, today Vogue’s own Anna Wintour oversees the entire guest list. With Vogue’s Editor in Chief in the chair, one can imagine the amount of glamour!
What’s with all the Color And Quirk?
The THEME of the MET Gala changes every year and is the most exclusive element along with the attendees!
This year was about the ‘camp in fashion’. Guests were seen flaunting their own take on the theme which ranged from quirky to outrageous yet all equal darlings of the costume world!
Camp in Fashion: The MET Gala 2019 theme:
“In an industry that thrives on statement pieces, reinvention, and topping the last trend, camp may have become synonymous with a certain class of pop-influenced fashion designers,” wrote Aileen Kwun of the CNN.
Talking about “Camp in Fashion” in her essay Susan Sontag described it as the “love of the unnatural; esoteric, a badge of identity among the urban cliques”. True to that the styles were loud, quirky interpretations of the Barbie, McDonald’s, SpongeBob Squarepants among others!
Synonymous with the pop-influenced fashion, Camp was even popular in the age of social media where extremes are flaunted, raised and revered!
The Outstanding Glitterati in the MET 2019:
From Lady Gaga to Serena Williams and Harry Styles, all know for their brave obnoxious fashion statements, co-chaired the event with Gucci Creative Director, Alessandro Michele.
