Bollywood Divas In The Most Unconventional Roles

Clad in beautiful chiffon saris, dancing by the side of misty lake, making cheesy dialogues while the male leads do all the concrete scenes. Aren’t you tired of watching actresses look like Barbie dolls without their substantial contribution to the actual content of the movie? Why is it that the movie always revolves around the Hero trying to do all good things ?

For years bollywood has treated heroines like some accessories to please the eyes of the audiences. But, the film industry has now realised that heroines can play the part of a hero as well . After some recent movies, its proven that heroines need not be the dainty females who are mere showpieces but can also play the main lead with a strong character.

Here is a list of the five movies which were successful in showcasing bollywood heroines as the real heroes. 

ENGLISH VINGLISH

A film capturing the problem of every “bhartiya nari”, it made a path straight into the heart of every Indian. A comeback movie of Sridevi, who portrays the role Shashi and her journey to learn English in order to earn some respect for herself. She was considered nothing but a good cook who made amazing “ladoos”. This movie is based on the life of the director,Gauri Shinde who herself has witnessed such an incident because of her mother not being proficient in English. According to her, this movie was a way to say sorry to her mother.  It made a bumper opening domestically and overseas, earning $ 400 million in India.

HIGHWAY

It is a story of Veera, played by Alia Bhatt who develops the Stockholm syndrome after being kidnapped from a petrol pump on a highway. As the narration continues, it is discovered that Veera was molested by his uncle when she was a child and shockingly her mother forced her to suppress this fact. As time passed  by, she became more comfortable with her abductor Mahavir, played by Randeep Hooda, than with her own family. A “not so typical” story, Alia in the main lead plays her role exceptionally well.

KAHAANI

How can one forget the impeccable performance of Vidya Balan in Kahaani? She outpaced all the male superstars of bollywood after doing this film followed with pictures like ‘The Dirty Picture’, ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and ‘Ishqiya’.

Kahaani stars Vidya Balan as Vidya Bagchi, a pretentious pregnant woman searching for her missing husband in Kolkata during the festival of Durga Puja, assisted by Satyoki “Rana” Sinha (Parambrata Chatterjee) and Khan (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). She met with some doctors and a pregnant women to learn the nuance experienced during pregnancy and followed the main points. Vidya, in the main lead did a remarkable performance of a pregnant women and displayed varied emotions of  being vengeful and emotional alongside displaying her inner strength in the most beautiful way.

QUEEN

Portrayed as an under-confident girl, Rani who goes to Paris and Amsterdam on her honey moon alone after her fiancé calls of the wedding, Kanagana Ranaut has done full justice to her character.

She is the heart and soul of film and not for once did she seem to be artificial.  Her brutal honesty and “desi” accent won the hearts of millions. She made her way to a national award as well for Queen. 

COCKTAIL

Deepika Padukone in a completely carefree, fearless role of a  modern day young girl named Veronica ; a kind of character she has never played before. At that time, her role as Veronica was declared as her best performance so far. Her carefree self along with her strong character in the movie even overshadowed the role of Saif Ali Khan.

Movie enthusiasts out there, find some time, grab a bowl of popcorn and have an  amazing time watching these women play iconic roles while entertaining you.
