Curly Hair Care Must-Do’s for Survival in COVID-19 Self-Quarantine!

How to Take Care of Curly Hair for Survival in COVID-19 Self-Quarantine

If there’s one good thing you do for yourself this apocalypse, care for your curls. Then thank me later.

“I love your hair!”

I get this often because I have naturally curly hair. But even though they look brilliant like a well-conceptualized work of art, it isn’t easy to maintain. Yet, I wouldn’t change my hair for anything! When you have been gifted tresses that anyone would envy on themselves, you gotta move mountains to keep them.

Until I started putting together this blog, I had no idea how many hair care tips I have been going wrong on. Curly hair care is not the same as other hair care routines. Curls are fragile and have high chances of breakage and getting frizzy. Although to begin with, the process of maintaining them might seem like a lot of work, yet it’s completely worth it.

But before you start your hair-care routine, it is VERY IMPORTANT to understand what type your beautiful curls are. Take this quick quiz!

I have 3B curl type with high porosity and low density.

Again, no matter your curl type, below are a few essential and basic tips with some rule-breakers that align well with all:

Must-Have a Morning Routine.

Whether you have extremely curly hair or in the borderline, almost wavy, this routine suits both. Also, this simple hair care ritual works brilliantly on both wet hair and dry hair.

Take a spray bottle, fill it ¾ with water and ¼ with a conditioner. Then shake the mixture such that they assimilate. Spray it on your hair and finger comb. It will help add moisture and detangle, making the curls look healthy.

Another routine is mixing distilled water, 2 capsules of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and 2 tablespoons of a conditioner in a spray bottle. Spray and leave it in. The results are astonishing glowing locks!

Hair Masks to the Rescue!

Often we slap our faces with a range of face masks and forget that our hair needs it too!

Another haircare morning routine that works wonders is a mask made of yoghurt. Take one cup of yoghurt, 2 tbsp of honey, 4 tablespoons olive oil and some Vitamin E gel capsules. Apply this mixture, put on a shower cap for 30 minutes and wash.

You can even prepare another hair mask with avocado, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and honey. Apply the mix to your hair, put on a plastic cap and leave for an hour before washing.

Did you know that applying Vitamin E on the face equally does wonders?

Drying your hair right!

Wet curly hair is the most fragile to breakage and frizz. Do not use a towel to dry and never use a hair-drier. Let your curls dry naturally – tilt your head forward and squeeze the hair upward gently to release excess water.  Use a cotton T-shirt to gently scrunch the remaining water, but make sure not to rub. Finally allow the tresses to dry naturally.

Did you know that even touching your curls during the drying process generates frizz!

Lose the brush and the Comb, no kidding!

Brushing/combing your curls is the worst thing you can do to them (yes yes, momma’s advice out of the window). Brushing curly hair will do two things mainly – a) it is aggressive and will destroy the natural curls and b) the curls will lose definition and thereby provoke frizz.

In emergencies (read: untangling) you can comb only when your hair is wet. Use a wide-toothed comb, start at the ends and work your way up – this will avoid breakage.

Did you know that curly hair ought to be combed with conditioner while wet but brushed while dry, yet it is better to avoid both?

Know your Shampoo Game!

It is very essential to skip daily shampooing of your locks. However, using a conditioner daily even if you are not using a shampoo works wonders. When you do wash, use a mild shampoo and a low lather cleansing conditioner and it will help retain the natural moisture and oils. Use only cold water to ever wash those curls. Most importantly, make sure that your shampoo is sulfate and alcohol-free.

Did you know that deep conditioning at least twice a week is a must for curly hair!

I will leave you with these five highly essential curly hair tips. Although it may seem basic, the idea is to follow them by the book diligently. When you do the results are beyond mesmerising and you will thank me, forever!

Now, now, did you stock up on your Conditioners while you self-quarantine? If not make sure this item is a MUST HAVE in your list of daily needs. You may fret and say that the world is dying, but if you do manage to live, having better hair will work in your favour and I would second my statement without a doubt!
